The answer is 6. You need to multiply each position where there is an X and ignore where there is 0.
so
XOX = 1x3 = 3 (X is in position 1 and 3)
OXXX = 2x3x4 = 24
OXOXX = 2x4x5 = 40
OOOXOX = 4x6= 24
XXXO = 1x2x3 = 6
